Good braking technique is an important basis for driving safety on roads and trails. With the new ABS for the intelligent system, Bosch eBike Systems guarantees better braking on any road surface. Whether crossing the city with the eCargo or hiking challenging trails with the eMTB, the new Bosch eBike ABS with MAGURA components is designed to meet the requirements of different types of eBikes and thus reduce accidents even more effectively.

Incorrect braking behavior is one of the main causes of bicycle accidents. "On a bicycle, the front brake is essential to achieve a short braking distance. However, many people avoid using it because they fear falling due to the high braking effect," says Claus Fleischer, CEO of Bosch eBike Systems. "The Bosch eBike ABS specifically counteracts this effect, significantly reducing the risk of accidents and rollovers." In fact, if all electric bikes were equipped with reliable ABS, up to 29% of accidents involving them could be avoided every year. Studies conducted by Bosch Accident Research prove this.

The new ABS for eBikes: smaller, lighter, more aesthetic
The safety aspect is particularly important to Bosch. More than 40 years ago, the company launched the world's first mass-produced automotive ABS. Since 1995, Bosch has been producing anti-lock braking systems for motorcycles. The first ABS for electric bikes followed in 2018. With the new ABS, Bosch eBike Systems now presents the smallest ABS in the world, developed on the basis of motorcycle technology. This means that, for the first time, eBike manufacturers can equip all types of eBikes with Bosch's optimized brake assist technology. The control unit of the new Bosch eBike ABS is 77% smaller and about 55% lighter than the previous model and integrates discreetly into the eBike design.

The right mode for every type of eBike
For the new eBike ABS, Bosch offers different modes, each of which is optimally designed for the braking requirements of different types of eBikes and road surfaces. Owners of an eCargo bike with ABS Cargo benefit from fast, safe braking that allows them to stay on track even when fully loaded. The ABS Touring is suitable for traveling with the eCity Bike in the city, characterized by changing road surfaces, pedestrian crossings and traffic lights, or for weekend trips immersed in nature with the eBike trekking. The ABS Allroad mode has been specially developed for light off-roading, so eMountainbikers can follow their passion more safely on dirt roads and trails. The ABS Trail mode, developed in collaboration with athletes, is aimed at sporty eBikers who are always looking for new challenges on demanding trails and difficult terrain. The ABS Trail helps them ride with greater foresight, control and concentration in surprising situations, such as a steeper slope or a blind corner. In this way, eBikers can further refine their riding technique, improving their performance on the trail, and at the same time be safer on the road. If you ride on dirt or asphalt roads, you can easily switch between ABS Trail and ABS Allroad in the eBike Flow app or via the Kiox 300 display.

Using the Kiox 300 it is also possible to recover the data relating to the last braking. In this way, eBikers can view and analyze their braking distance or time to gradually improve their braking behavior on different road surfaces.

Greater safety on different road surfaces
The ABS is activated automatically as soon as the pedals are pressed. Decisive for the effect of Bosch eBike ABS are above all two basic functions, which make braking and driving significantly safer. The front wheel anti-lock feature, for example, automatically adjusts brake pressure by constantly monitoring wheel speed and preventing the tires from locking when braking. Sensitively adjusted braking behavior promotes control and stability, especially on slippery road surfaces. On non-slippery road surfaces, the rear wheel lift limit reduces the risk of it lifting off the ground. By reducing the likelihood of rollover, this feature contributes significantly to greater driving safety and avoiding accidents.

The new Bosch eBike ABS with MAGURA components will be available from summer 2022. The available ABS mode depends on the specific eBike category set by the bicycle manufacturer. Interested parties should check directly when purchasing the eBike whether the new eBike ABS is installed or ask your specialist dealer, as retrofitting is not possible.
