The curtain raising event of the 2017 Continental Cycling Heroes Tour carried the name of Fabian Cancellara. The beautiful tour, linked to the Record Bank E3 Harelbeke, will get a new host in 2018 and with it a new name. Because Fabian Cancellara is shifting his focus to his own international projects, he will hand over the event to another cycling hero: Johan Museeuw.
“Last year it was a great pleasure to ride on the course of the E3 Harelbeke with my fans and be one of the Continental Cycling Heroes," says Fabian. "So there's a little bit of regret but also pride that I can pass the torch to a great cycling champion of the 90s, Johan Museeuw. I hope that all fans of the Lion of Flanders will come to Harelbeke on Sunday 25 March to ride this beautiful tour with him.”
Title partner Continental is delighted to add Johan Museeuw to its list of cycling heroes. "Johan Museeuw is an absolute monument of Flemish cycling," says Thomas Vanautgaerden, marketing and communication manager at Continental Benelux. “The 1996 world champion in Lugano, and winner of 11 classics, including three times the Tour of Flanders and three editions of Paris-Roubaix, is definitely one of the all-time greats. The Classic with start and finish in his own West-Flanders seemed like a fitting tribute."
The Johan Museeuw Classic is the opening round of the 2018 Continental Cycling Heroes Tour. The following events have already been confirmed:
25 March: Johan Museeuw Classic – Harelbeke (on the E3 Harelbeke course)
29 April: Philippe Gilbert Classic – Aywaille
1 May: Greg van Avermaet Classic – Berlare
1 September: Sven Nys Classic – Baal
The remaining events of the Continental Cycling Heroes Tour will soon be revealed.
